Making Almond Flour

I was really wanting to try these grain free biscuits over on Food Renegade … but the thought of buying ALMOND FLOUR sent me screaming for the hills. The price is OUT of the world.

Of course, I had tons of almonds in the house. Yeah, some are salted and roasted, others are raw and unsalted. And the last time at Costco, I bought a bag of unsalted, raw almonds …

Perfect timing, don’t you say?

Almond flour is apparently not difficult to make. Really. Without any unusual kitchen appliances being needed is even more appealing. Yes, IF you are the lucky one that hasย a Vitamix, then this will be super easy, but if you are like ME, and have to resort to the food processor, it’s ok too, as that works just as well, maybe NOT as quickly.

I was going to try the blender (again, a simple Cuisinart) but seem to remember that hubby blew up the last blender I had doing coffee beans. Yeah. A food processor makes more sense.

1 cup of unsalted, raw almonds gives you about 1 cup of almond flour.

I hear that you can soak the almonds overnight to remove the skins. This would eliminate the speckled end result? I may try that next time, maybe not?

Yippee.

Here we go!

1 cup almonds

Place in food processor.

Cap it up and pulse til fine. I hear that you can make almond butter if you take it too far ๐Ÿ˜€ Not a bad idea, but not what we are aiming for on this experiment.

Pulse the nuts, do NOT let it rip … seriously.ย 

Noisy. Very noisy. But look:

It works!!

Um, yeah, it’s a frugal tip in my opinion. I’m trying to eat healthier and less processed stuff … this so works for me! Rumor, or rather GOOGLE says that you can push through a fine mesh strainer and repeat the pulsing, repeat the straining, but honestly, it worked for me and I would do this again…

I’ve since made the Grain Free Biscuits, using both this flour and the real deal from the store … up next? Grain Free crackers to satisfy that crunch craving!

  4. Visiting from Mopping the Floor… soaking the almonds doesn't help to remove the skins, rather it makes them softer an thus easier to blend. I've soaked almonds for homemade almond milk, but to be honest, I'm not sure if soaking would be best for flour. By soaking in water, you're adding moisture to the almond. Kinda seems counterproductive if you're making flour… which, by the way, is super cool! Great job!

  6. The flour you can buy is MUCH finer and I would strongly recommend it for baking. But as a trial basis type thing, it was perfect for me and gave me something to compare to when I did break down and buy the flour. I think this would be excellent for crackers which is next on my list of things to try!

  7. Yup, it's expensive! But now that I've bought some, I'm flipping back and forth between the two … I think for real fluffy type of items, use the super fine stuff (flour) and for other items that can stand a denser, coarser texture, use the ground almonds ๐Ÿ™‚

  9. I soak my almonds for almond milk then use what's left over from making the milk as almond meal (which I use as almond flour . . . because I'm lazy.) I can't wait to try these biscuits though! I often toss the wet meal on a pan and stick it in the oven at the lowest temperature to dry then toss it in a container and in the fridge until I need it.
